Motorkhana 23rd November 2008

It was a day of mixed weather with rain one minute and glorious sunshine the next. This made it hard for the drivers, as one moment you had a tonne of grip, the next you didn't. A total of 26 drivers from both the Fiat Club of NSW and fellow competitors from Group 7 tackled the tests, with Philip East taking top honours. FCNSW members stuck around afterwards for the annual Prez Khana, a one off event designed by the club president for the right to hold the perpetual trophy for the year. This years event was a team effort, with a blind folded driver and dedicated navigator. All competiors tackled the V-Slalom test, with some incredibly unspectacular times recorded. Congratulations to Naomi and Rebecca for winning the cup.

Northern Beaches drive & Pizza night 19th October 2008

The drive from Rhodes to Palm Beach started with a beautiful sunny day and not a cloud in the sky. The convoy left Rhodes railway station at 2.00pm and headed north to our pre arranged re grouping stop at Terry Hills where we met up with 4 more cars-Graham Towers (850 OTR),Richard Dalzeil (850 sports coupe),Peter Beckerleg (2300 coupe) and a beautifully restored series 1 X19.
From here we headed down to Palm Beach where we met Simon & Catriona in the 600 Jolly. We stayed at Palm Beach for about 1 hour before heading back to Elanora Heights via Warriewood beach and North Narrabeen beach.
The group arrived at the Pizza shop about 5.15 for a great meal of salads, garlic crust and pizza. We all ate our fill before heading for home. The day/dinner was a great success with a good time had by all that attended.

Oran Park Supersprint 6th October 2008

The weeks leading up to the event presented a couple of interesting things, firstly our new club member Andrew Matthews asked his brother-a former Australian 2 litre super tourer-driver Justin Matthews to come along with his historic group C ford escort. Unfortunately the car is not ready at the moment so he still agreed to come along as an instructor for the day. He also asked another friend to come along, an Australian motor racing icon-Bob Holden who decided to compete in his front wheel drive group A corolla which he informed me is a factory built race car for the British touring car series. The car has been in storage for many years and recently taken out for a minor rebuild to start competing in historic events.
This was a highlight of the run-up to the day as having a couple of drivers such as Bob and Justin willing to attend our event is a thrill .

Hope to see all our club members who attended this meeting and more at the future events, if not competing-spectating. Watching our old Fiats going around a race track is a wonderful sight.

Fiat Nationals 16-18 January 2009

If you weren't there, you missed a ripper. Most Fiat nuts look forward to every chance they can get to drive their vehicle, however it's more than this that draws their full attention towards the Nationals. It's the fact that they get to spend a whole weekend driving their pride and joy with the added benefit of getting to do it with seventy six other registered nuts and their respective entourage's. The Organising Committee had a huge amount of work to do to put this weekend together, and from the moment cars began rolling off trailers on Friday night, it was obvious they had done a great job.

Friday night saw the welcome reception out at the circuit. From here, several gatherings emerged at the plethora of hotels used for the event. I am sure many wives were promised an early night, and several beverages later I am sure they removed themselves from the hub of conversation that had formed at the Alpine Heritage.

Saturday morning saw a crisp start to the day, with 46 drivers taking the start line for the 46th running of the Fiat of Italy Cup. The outer grounds of Wakefield Park provided an excellent venue for the event, with a smooth but dusty surface for the states and drivers to battle it out. Michael McGeorge did a great job to take out the event. His father had previously won the event twice back in 78 & 85, so it meant a lot for Michael to get his name on the trophy. It didn't come easy though, he narrowly beat three time winner Nathan Gotch by 0.25 seconds, with the worlds fastest junior Nick Filipetto a further 1.83 seconds up the road. NSW continues to hold the trophy, remaining unbeaten since 2001.

From here competitors spent a couple of hours re-charging their minds and washing their cars before heading into the heart of Goulburn for the Shannon's Insurance Presentazione. The council had closed off a main street for us, and with a total of 60 cars on display, we nearly needed a bigger street. It was great to see so many of the locals come out to have a look at the cars. I don't think there was ever a moment where someone didn't have a head in a window, or a million questions to ask. Congratulations to Lyn Bartold for winning Best In Show for her 2008 Fiat 500. Not a bad effort considering this car was driven in the morning's motorkhana, and judging by the photos in the gallery, I would say hers was pretty dirty prior to putting it on display. Plans are already in motion to make next years Presentazione even bigger, but we may need that bigger street. Can we shut down the Hume Hwy? Did someone say block party?

With the street re-opened, everyone hit the Alpine Heritage for the annual Turin Imports BBQ. The caterers did an excellent job providing the meal, and it set a great tone for the rest of the evening. The front yard of the hotel had members from all the states chatting away till the late hours. You can't even begin to imagine half of the conversations that would have taken place amongst some of the great friends who meet at this event each year.

In 2005 the Fiat Nationals was expanded to include a hillclimb at the world famous Mount Panorama. 2009 was another landmark year, with the first running of the Fiatorque Supersprint around Wakefield Park Raceway. Many competitors took to the track on Friday to get an eye in, but Sunday morning was to be the true test. With a total of 63 drivers entered into the sprint, each competitor was given 5 sessions to lay down their fastest time of the day. Several didn't make it to 5, some in spectacular fashion, others in sad levels of failure. Nick Smith went on to win the event in his 131 Sports Sedan with a fastest time of 1.05.963. Jeremy Smith was a shave slower in the 124 with a time of 1.06.579, with father Ross on his heels with a 1.06.754. Do you reckon there is going to be some family trash talk over the next year?

Sunday night saw the event come to a close with the presentation dinner at the Goulburn Soldiers Club. The chance to sit down for a great meal, watch some of Tony Studans fantastic photos on the big screen, issue personal fines and award competitors is brilliant way to finish the event. Well done to Michael McGeorge for taking out not only the motorkhana, his class in the sprint, but also the Fiat Nationals outright champion for 2009.

Note your diaries, 2010 Fiat Nationals 15-17 January, Wakefield Park, Goulburn NSW. If you weren't there this year, you missed a ripper. If you're not there in 2010, you should be driving a Skoda.

Oran Park Supersprint

It was a great day weather wise with the track temperature rising from 32 at the start to over 50 later in the day, so grip was not a problem. Although Ross Smith did manage to have an "off" later in the day on his new race tyres and destroyed his spoiler in the process. The 124 was not meant to be a rallycross car! He did manage to take 2nd Outright though.
In their X1/9's, Glenn Smith battled with David Ius all day and was finally able to nudge in front on the score sheet by the barest of margins. Looks like the new Dunlop Direzza's have paid off. Glenn is very chuffed at being second fastest Fiat.
Second and third placed Club Members, however, go to Cheryl Sandrin and Leanne Matthews driving a Subaru Liberty. Great work girls, I see both your hubbies are much further down the list!
Paddy Martin made the trip up from Canberra with his 124CC and must be pleased with his times as I see that 3 Ferrari's, an Alfa Giulia 2 litre and even a Ford Mustang with 5 litres under the bonnet finished behind him.
Hard luck award on the day must go to Michael & Wayne McGeorge as their 127 expired in the morning's untimed session with what they thought was a blown head gasket, but Michael told me yesterday that it was "melted pistons and head" . Hmmm, wonder if he was joking?
Anyway, a big thank you to the Ferrari Club for another enjoyable, well run event. Next one is May 16th at Wakefield Park.
Warren Smith

Cheese & Wine Social 10/03/09

35 members rolled up to the March social for a spot of cheese and wine. A selection of reds, whites and even a little sticky was a great blend with a large variety of cheese. The night was also a great opportunity to present Ian Allison with a life membership in thanks for his huge commitment to the club.
Ferrari Club Supersprint 16/05/09

43 drivers took the the track on a cold and gloomy Saturday. The greasy track was a great equaliser, with several drivers from a variety of marques managing to turn their vehicles around. Danny Josef used his all wheel drive WRX to advantage, and set a FTD of 1:07.3200, with front Fiat runner Jeremy Smith a whisker behind in his 124 BC with a best time of 1:08.0500.

60th Anniversary Breakfast 02/05/09

The annual "Al's Breakfast" was held at The Waterfront in Homebush Bay. Our event kicked off Italian month for the centre and also our 60th anniversary officially. We had many and varied Fiats displayed along with machines from the Lancia and Ducati clubs. The Piazza was flanked by Fiat and Italian flags, with the cars mingled in with the Bocce court. There were around 40 people for breakfast which was a sumptuous and varied breakfast feast - with plenty of coffee, stories and laughs.

If this is anything to go by, the events tabled for this year should be great.

Club 60th Anniversary Luncheon

Well 60 years are done and dusted with the last celebration being the 60th Anniversary Lunch on the 15th November at the Marconi Club.

What an excellent day.   Five hours of reminiscing with old friends not seen in some cases for over 20 years.   Thank God for name tags as some of us had changed - but a smile of recognition or a tear make the years disappear.

Hopefully the more recent members were made to feel welcome and were able to understand the camaraderie of the club in past years - some members in the sixties, seventies and eighties had their children growing to adulthood in those years.

There were three generations of the Gillard, Gotch and McGeorges there on the day who will no doubt continue on with the Italian Love Affair.

The Lunch contained a well balanced mix of formal and light hearted moments -

"        A photo moment with all of the guests with a line of Fiats under our Banner
"        David Filapetto's welcome address
"        Nat Zanardo's memorable speech
"        Introduction of 10 former Presidents of the Club
"        The re- appearance of Stirrers' Spoon with the bulk of the recipients of the past
"        The awarding of the inaugural Clubman Award to Alan Steele

A highlight was the three screens running simultaneously of old film footage and slide show.   Our thanks must go to Tony Studens for his work on the day and prior to the event - well done Tony!

Many of us will remember this day for a long time to come.   Thank you all for a wonderful day.

Sue McGeorge

2010 Fiat Nationals 15-17/01/10

For the second year, the Fiat Nationals rolled into Goulburn NSW for a weekend packed full of fun, competition, and friendship.

Most Fiat nuts look forward to every chance they can get to drive their vehicle, however it's more than this that draws their full attention towards the Nationals. It's the fact that they get to spend a whole weekend driving their pride and joy with the added benefit of getting to do it with 91 other registered nuts and their respective entourage's.

Saturday morning saw a crisp start to the day, with 40 drivers taking the start line for the 47th running of the Fiat of Italy Cup. The outer grounds of Wakefield Park provided an excellent venue for the event, with a smooth but dusty surface for the states and drivers to battle it out. Martin Gallard (NSW) did a great job in his 126 Motorkhana Special to take out the event from Robert Judd (VIC) with a margin of 0.130, it does not get any closer than that! Bill Freame (VIC) took third place a further 9.41 seconds up the road. NSW continues to hold the trophy, remaining unbeaten since 2001.

From here competitors spent a couple of hours re-charging their minds and washing their cars before heading into the heart of Goulburn for the Shannon's Insurance Show & Shine. The council had closed off a main street for us, and with a total of 47 cars on display, we nearly needed a bigger street. It was great to see so many of the locals come out to have a look at the cars. I don't think there was ever a moment where someone didn't have a head in a window, or a million questions to ask. Congratulations to Allen Kent (NSW) for winning Best In Show for his immaculate Topolino. Our plans to hold our annual Turin Imports BBQ alongside the cars was quickly crushed when Goulurn received its monthly average of rain in just a few short hours. So it was back to Trappers Hotel for some food and raffle fun.

Sunday saw the second running of the Fiatorque Supersprint around Wakefield Park Raceway. Many competitors took to the track on Friday to get an eye in, but Sunday morning was to be the true test. With a total of 63 drivers entered into the sprint, each competitor was given 6 sessions to lay down their fastest time of the day. Several didn't make it to 6, some in spectacular fashion, others in sad levels of failure. Nick Smith went on to win the event in his 131 Sports Sedan for a second consecutive year with a fastest time of 1.04.300. Jeremy Smith was a shave slower in the 124 with a time of 1.08.300, with father Ross on his heels with a 1.08.800.

Well done to Bryce Alexander (SA) for taking out the Fiat Nationals outright champion for 2010 in his 128SL.

Note your diaries, 2011 Fiat Nationals 14-16 January, Wakefield Park, Goulburn NSW. If you weren't there this year, you missed a ripper. If you're not there in 2011, you should be driving a Skoda.
